Prayer Life
Prayer is at the heart of life at St Joseph’s RC Primary School, Mossley. Inspired by our mission, “Love, Learn, Give Your Best,” we help children grow in their relationship with God and discover how faith can guide their everyday lives.
We pray together at the beginning of the day, before lunch and before going home. Children learn traditional Catholic prayers and are encouraged to pray in their own words—to give thanks, ask for help and remember others. Through moments of quiet reflection, they learn that prayer can involve listening and stillness as well as words.
Celebrating the Word
Each class takes part in a weekly Celebration of the Word, gathering to listen to Scripture, reflect on its meaning and respond through prayer and action. Our celebrations follow four parts: Gather, Listen, Respond and Go Forth, helping children take the message of the Gospel into their daily lives.
As children move through school, they take increasing responsibility for preparing and leading prayer. They help choose Scripture, music and prayer intentions, prepare the prayer focus and suggest ways to put Jesus’ teaching into action.
Praying Together
Our prayer life includes whole-school worship, key-stage assemblies, hymn practice and celebration assemblies. We mark important seasons and feast days in the Church’s year, helping children deepen their understanding of our Catholic faith.
Every classroom has a prayer focus to support reflection. Our school prayer box also offers children a way to share their intentions, giving thanks and asking our community to pray for people who need comfort or support.
We are developing a new pupil RE leadership team to give children a greater voice in shaping our school’s prayer life. Funding has also been secured for a future prayer garden, which will provide a peaceful outdoor space for prayer and reflection.
Putting Faith into Action
Prayer inspires us to care for others. Through kindness, service and charitable activities, including our Harvest Festival and support for Macmillan, children learn to respond to the needs of their neighbours.
We welcome every child to take part in our prayer life with respect and understanding, nurturing a community where everyone feels valued and loved.
