History

At St Joseph’s, our History curriculum aims to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and help them understand how history has shaped the world they live in today. We encourage children to ask questions, think critically and develop a secure understanding of chronology, significant events, and the lives of people from different periods and cultures.

Our teaching of History is knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced so that pupils can build on prior learning and make meaningful connections over time. Through engaging lessons, high-quality resources and purposeful enquiry, children learn to interpret evidence, consider different viewpoints and develop historical skills such as comparison, cause and consequence, and change and continuity.

As a Catholic school, we place a strong emphasis on values such as justice, compassion and respect. Through the study of history, pupils explore moral choices, learn about the impact of faith and belief on societies, and reflect on how the actions of individuals and groups have shaped communities. We encourage children to consider their role as responsible citizens who can learn from the past to make positive choices for the future.

History at St Joseph’s is inclusive and enriching, bringing learning to life through stories, discussion, visits and cross-curricular links. Our aim is for all pupils to leave St Joseph’s with a strong sense of identity, a respect for diversity, and a love of learning about the past.
