Maths
At St Joseph’s, we believe mathematics is a vital life skill that enables children to reason, solve problems and better understand the world around them. Our aim is to develop confident, resilient learners who enjoy mathematics and recognise its importance in everyday life.
Teaching and learning in mathematics is guided by the White Rose Maths planning approach, which ensures clear progression, consistency and high expectations for all pupils. Lessons are carefully structured using the concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach. Children first explore mathematical concepts using practical resources, then through visual representations, before moving on to abstract thinking and formal written methods.
Through our mathematics curriculum, pupils are encouraged to:
-
Develop a secure understanding of number and calculation
-
Reason mathematically and explain their thinking using appropriate vocabulary
-
Apply their mathematical knowledge to problem-solving in a range of contexts
-
Build confidence, perseverance and a positive attitude towards challenge
At St Joseph’s, we want all children to see themselves as capable mathematicians who are not afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. By fostering curiosity and enjoyment, we aim to provide strong foundations that support future learning and everyday life.
